May 7, 2011 is going to be an eventful day in Rome, Georgia. Enjoy taking a walk down Broad Street to see a wonderful variety of art work that will be on display from 10 AM to 5 PM as part of Art Walk.

Celebrate International Museum Day by visiting Oak Hill and Martha Berry Museum. Admission is FREE from 10 AM to 5 PM. See demonstrations on how to use a weaving loom and spinning wheel as well as the “Rich Tapestry” exhibit that shares the history of handicrafts at Berry College.

Learn about the Spirits of the Civil War from 1 PM to 2:30 PM at the Rome/Floyd County Visitor’s Center. Take a tour of downtown Rome on the Toonerville Trolley to learn about the major Civil War sites in the area. The tour is FREE but tickets are required. Call 706-295-5576 for tickets. 

Finish the evening with the Firefly Fling: An Evening of Bluegrass and Barbecue at Oak Hill. Have a tasty meal of barbecue provided by the Harvest Moon Cafe as you listen to the great sounds of recording artists Larkin Poe. The show will begin at 7 PM. Tickets are $20 for this event. Tryouts for Up at Bat

BaseballTry out for a reality television series Up at Bat at State Mutual Stadium in Rome, Georgia on March 26, 2011. Tryouts will start promptly at 10 AM. All participants should arrive by 9:30 AM. Free Rome Braves hats will be given to the first 100 contestants!

This one day promo being cast by 10 Ten Entertainment and Crazy Legs Productions will give anyone 18 or older a chance to play professional baseball. The casting for this TV show involves baseball tryouts. Bring your own gear and give it a shot. The better you are, the better chance you have of making the cut. There will be professional scouts, managers, reporters, and players on hand. Concessions will be available so bring your family out to cheer you on!

Voices from the Trail

Voices from the Trail is an exhibit on display through June 2011 at the Chieftains Museum in Rome, Georgia. Listen to the stories from the Trail as the Cherokee were forced to leave their homeland and travel across the country in terrible conditions. Their words will live on.

Admission is $5 for adults, $3 for senior citizens, $2 for students. Chieftain members are Free. Group discounts are available for 10 or more. Museum hours are Wednesday through Saturday 10 AM to 5 PM. Contact 706-291-9494 for more information.

Civil War Symposium

Civil War Soldier2011 begins Rome’s Convention and Visitor’s Bureau 5 year commemoration to Rome’s Civil War heritage during the 150th anniversary of the War Between the States. The first event on the schedule is on January 27, 2011 at 6:30 PM in the Coosa Room at the Floyd County Public Library.

Dan Roper, a respected local author and historian, will present the first Civil War Symposium. He is the publisher and editor of Georgia Backroads and has published over 80 articles on Georgia history and travel. This event is Free. Polar Bear Paddle

Floating down the riverIf floating down the Etowah River in the middle of winter floats your boat then join CRBI (Coosa River Basin Initiative), the city of Rome, and Keep Rome Beautiful for the Polar Bear Paddle, a 6 mile trip down the Etowah River on January 15, 2011. You put your boat in at Grizzard Park and end at Heritage Park in downtown Rome. Complimentary canoes and kayaks are available from CRBI. Pre-registration is required. Ride for the Black Knights

BikersJoin the Rome Composite Squadron of the Civil Air Patrol on October 16, 2010 for their 1st annual Ride for the Black Knights benefit motorcycle ride. Enjoy the fall weather and the beautiful North Georgia scenery as you travel on a guided 60 mile round trip tour of the area. The ride begins and ends at The Church at Northside in Rome. Registration for the ride begins at 9:30 AM with the departure time of 10:30 AM. The tour is expected to end at approximately 12:00 Noon back at the church where a hot dog/hamburger lunch will be served.

The Rome Composite Squadron of the Civil Air Patrol is a civilian all volunteer auxilliary of the US Air Force and has been helping Rome and Floyd County for over 40 years with their assistance in search and rescue, disaster relief efforts, and exercises with emergency management agencies. This benefit will help to fulfill their 3 missions of Emergency Services/Search and Rescue, Cadet Programs, and Aerospace Education.

The Hiding Place
