Adult Spelling Bee

Test your spelling skills at the Shane Richardson Memorial Adult Spelling Bee to benefit Harbor House on February 2, 2012 from 6 PM to 8 PM. Teams of 3 members each, ages 21 and older, will compete with other teams. The teams will be able to consult using pencil and paper before each spelling. Each team will be allowed 1 free stinger (respell). Additional stingers may be purchased prior to the start of the spelling bee for $50 each.

Registration for each team will be $250.  Applications must be submitted by January 30, 2012.  The spelling bee will be held at the Spruill Ballroom at Berry College in Rome, Georgia. Trophies will be awarded for the Best Team Name and People’s Choice.  All proceeds from this event will go to benefit Harbor House – The Northwest Georgia Child Advocacy Center. AKA Sorority, Inc. Flapjack Fundraiser

Theta Omicron Omega will host their first annual Pancake Breakfast at Applebee’s Neighborhood Grill & Bar in Rome, Georgia on Saturday, December 3, 2011 from 8 am until 10 am.

Tickets for the event are $7.00. Proceeds from the Pancake Breakfast will go directly towards EAF and all deserving applicants.

The Theta Omicron Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated has serviced Floyd, Polk, Carroll and Bartow Counties for decades through scholarship and service to all mankind.

The Alpha Kappa Alpha Educational Advancement Foundation (EAF) was founded in 1980 with a mission to constantly promote lifelong learning through charitable donations, scholarships and grants.

Lecture – Trail of Tears

Visit the Chieftains Museum-Major Ridge Home in Rome, Georgia on October 13, 2011 at 7:30 PM for a lecture by Brian Hicks, author of a new book, “Toward the Setting Sun”. This book was written about Major Ridge, John Ross, Andrew Jackson, and the Trail of Tears and Brian Hicks will be discussing the book.

Books will be available for purchase and the author will be on hand to sign them. If you are a Chieftain member, you can enjoy a reception with the author at the Grizzard Center prior to the lecture .

2011 4th of July Celebration

2011 Independence Day CelebrationCelebrate the 4th of July at Ridge Ferry Park in Rome, Georgia on July 4, 2011 with a  day of fun and entertainment. There will be live music, food, plenty of entertainment for the children, and a “bang” of an ending with a spectacular fireworks show. The gates open at 6 PM. Some Like it Hot!

Bring your lawn chairs and blankets to Bridgepoint Plaza in downtown Rome, Georgia on June 11, 2011 for “Some Like it Hot”, the first movie in the Summer Outdoor Movie Series. This movie is a comedy starring Marilyn Monroe, Tony Curtis, and Jack Lemmon.

The movie will begin at dusk (around 8:30 PM) and is brought to you courtesy of the Downtown Development Authority, the Downtown Improvement District and the Rome/Floyd Parks and Recreation Department. For more information, call 706-236-4520.

Firefly Fling and More

May 7, 2011 is going to be an eventful day in Rome, Georgia. Enjoy taking a walk down Broad Street to see a wonderful variety of art work that will be on display from 10 AM to 5 PM as part of Art Walk.

Celebrate International Museum Day by visiting Oak Hill and Martha Berry Museum. Admission is FREE from 10 AM to 5 PM. See demonstrations on how to use a weaving loom and spinning wheel as well as the “Rich Tapestry” exhibit that shares the history of handicrafts at Berry College.

Learn about the Spirits of the Civil War from 1 PM to 2:30 PM at the Rome/Floyd County Visitor’s Center. Take a tour of downtown Rome on the Toonerville Trolley to learn about the major Civil War sites in the area. The tour is FREE but tickets are required. Call 706-295-5576 for tickets. 

Finish the evening with the Firefly Fling: An Evening of Bluegrass and Barbecue at Oak Hill. Have a tasty meal of barbecue provided by the Harvest Moon Cafe as you listen to the great sounds of recording artists Larkin Poe. The show will begin at 7 PM. Tickets are $20 for this event. Tryouts for Up at Bat

BaseballTry out for a reality television series Up at Bat at State Mutual Stadium in Rome, Georgia on March 26, 2011. Tryouts will start promptly at 10 AM. All participants should arrive by 9:30 AM. Free Rome Braves hats will be given to the first 100 contestants!

This one day promo being cast by 10 Ten Entertainment and Crazy Legs Productions will give anyone 18 or older a chance to play professional baseball. The casting for this TV show involves baseball tryouts. Bring your own gear and give it a shot. The better you are, the better chance you have of making the cut. There will be professional scouts, managers, reporters, and players on hand. Concessions will be available so bring your family out to cheer you on!
